Wisdom Agbodotsi a farmer from Kpota has been adjudged the Overall Best Farmer of the Akatsi South District at this year’s National Farmers’ day. The Kpota mixed farmer owns 40 acres of maize, 14 acres of Groundnut, 12 acres of cowpea, 16 acres of cassava, 6 acres of sweet potato, 3 acres of woodlot, 0.5 acres of pineapple, 120 hives of beekeeping, 4 pigs, 8 goats and 70 local poultry fowls.
Mr. Wisdom Agbodotsi walked away with a tricycle, a field boot and 2 cutlasses.
This year’s farmers’ day has been celebrated at Atsiekpi Electoral Area. In attendance were Hon. Leo – Nelson Adzidogah DCE of Akatsi South District, Hon. Godwin Asimenu, the Presiding Member of Akatsi South District, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor MP for Akatsi South Constituency, Mr Nathaniel Dzadey DCD of Akatsi South District and many other dignitaries.
The other winners are Mr. Felix Akpabli from Lume who placed second also took home, a flatscreen TV, 1 jacto knapsack, a field boot and two cutlasses.
Madam Elikplim Hamenu Amenorpe, 2nd runner-up from Lume also won a fridge, a jacto knapsack, a field boot and two cutlasses.
Also, Mr. Ellis Kwasikuma was named Best Agric Extension Agent flat from the Gefia, Kpota, Bata Operational Area. He also took away a Jacto, 2 cutlasses, a field boat and half piece of cloth.
Ghana today has marked the 33rd edition of the National Farmers’ day. The nationwide event is aimed at rewarding our hardworking farmers who have been outstanding in their respective areas to feed 25 million of the nation still counting. Several farmers all over the country are expected to be honoured for their contribution towards the development of the agricultural sector.
In a speech read on behalf of the President H. E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo by the DCE of Akatsi South District he congratulated farmers for their hardwork. He also encouraged the youth to involve themselves in farming in order to make use of the government’s policy initiative “Planting for Food and Jobs”.
“Tsiekpi is a hub of rice in Akatsi South District now and the necessary equipment support from government will make Xavi also hooked to rice production”, he said.
He said about 200 acres of land has been allocated for Ministry of Trade and Industry for a special project which when it comes to realization will create jobs for the people of Akatsi south District.
He added that about 5000 farmers will benefit from the government’s water project at Atsiekpi as well as the feeding program.
The MP for the district Hon. Bernard Ahiafor has charged the NPP Government to honour their promises of “one District one factory and one million dollars per constituency.”
