The Director for Global Communities and Initiatives Evans Degboe has implored assembly members in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Volta Region, to involve the media in their activities to enhanced accountability.
According to him, the media plays a central role in every democratic dispensation, and the assembly members should make use of the media to account to the people.
Evans Degboe was speaking at a workshop for assembly members and other stakeholders under the theme “Building Social Accountability through Civil Society and the Media for Development” in Nkwanta.
“The training would promote civic participation and engagement by mobilizing local government authorities and civil society including women, Persons With Disability, traditional authorities among issues of local government” He said.
He added that 1992 Constitution prescribes a decentralized government system where there is a transfer of authority for decision-making, finances and management from the central to the local government authority.
“The Metropolitan, municipal, or the District Assembly is the pivot of administration and government decision-making at the local level.”
Evans Degboe however, mentioned that in Ghana, the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF), the District Development Fund (DDF) and the District Internal generated Fund (DIGF) are funds for district assemblies (MMDAs) which do not fully help the development of the districts due to some central government directives and its utilisation mechanisms which had denied the various constituents the benefits of the fund.
“We believe that the use of social accountability mechanisms to enhance efficiency in service delivery and the development is a critical challenge to strengthen the institutional accountability and promote citizens participation and involvement for the more inclusive management and ownership of state assets and resources lawfully mandated for an improved services delivery to the citizenry especially the women and PWDs,” he noted.
Mr Degboe entreated citizens to hold their assembly members accountable for effective delivery.
On behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, Claudio Kpormegbe Asenti, welcomed participants and thanked the organisers for bringing such training to Nkwanta.
He added that these will also enhance accountability and performance of the MMDs in the planning and execution of projects and further reduce the tendency of corruption, improved quality of developmental projects to a better standard of living.
