Torgbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V has charged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to follow the footsteps of his predecessors because they were hardworking people in the police service and therefore he has the same confidence in him to take the service to a higher level.
The Paramount chief of Aflao, said this when the Inspector General of Police, David Asante – Apeatu paid a working visit to the Aflao Traditional Council.
Torgbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V took the opportunity to congratulate the IGP on his appointment as well as pour his grievances to him about the work of the police in the traditional area.
According to Torgbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V, due to the paperwork done at the border he thought it wise to establish a fire attendant and police post which he was working on but the customs service rejected the idea that they do not need them at the border.
He entreated the IGP to talk to them because security safety is Paramount to the people working at the border.
“The border needs police post at the heart of border to control crime and fire attendant due to the paperwork they do there. IGP go and tell them as you are here.”
The Inspector General of Police paid a working visit to Ketu South Municipal District Assembly and the Aflao Traditional Council in the Volta Region in the Aflao last Friday. The visit which includes some top officials of the Ghana police service.
According to the IGP the visit was to afford the opportunity to familiarise himself with the security issues of the area and to interact with the Municipal Chief Executive of the Ketu South Municipal Assembly Hon Edem Eliot Agbenorwu and the Paramount chief of the people of Aflao Torgbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V and the Aflao Traditional Council and to present himself as customs demand.
Togbui also charged the police service and all the security agencies to do more and speak well about the people of Aflao and not just the negative, because the people of Aflao are not bad people.
“It’s only the bad aspects of Aflao they hear in Accra and the good ones the security agencies do not want to comment about it”. he said.
He again took the opportunity to caution the police and the immigration personnel to stop beating and harassing his people if found selling on the streets of the border because if they do, they go and still come back to the border because there is no market for them to sell and do there business.
According to Torgbui Fiti V the length and breadth of the Aflao chieftaincy stretches from Ghana to Bennin. He said the one in Ghana is called Aflao Traditional area and all put together formed the Aflao Traditional State.
“Unfortunately almost half of my children are in Ghana and Togo and they know that Aflao is the chieftaincy Seat of Aflao Traditional State and the capital city of Togo which we call Lome chieftaincy is still under him and therefore they do come to greet me and participate in all kinds of activities like funeral traditional function etc” he said.
According to Torgbui Fiti V people do not understand why people from Togo come for festivals and funerals in Ghana or why some people from Ghana fetch water from Togo or even trade there.
“For instance, if someone from Kologa wants to buy slippers do you expect them to travel to Accra before he or she can buy slippers to use in the bathroom? It will be difficult for them to go to Accra than to buy it in Togo.” he added.
He again said the Aflao market that his people should go and buy things is not available and when it’s a market day people are seen using the border as their selling place.
In a response to the issues raised by the Paramount chief of Aflao Torgbui Adzongaga Amenya Fiti V, the Inspector General of Police David Asante- Apeatu has assured the paramount chief to deliver his request to the headquarters as soon he get back to Accra. He aslo congratulated the paramount chief on the education he has been giving to his people on radio and the numerous support he offered to the development of the District. He also asked for more support.
According to the IGP policing in the Volta Region is not that easy. He said Volta Region has chalked so many successes and the crime level is at its low level. He has asked the police commander to submit the names of those who have served in the police service in the district that deserves to be promoted to him.
